The Rua dos Mouros apartments are situated in a typical city zone of Lisbon, of narrow and paved streets, Bairro Alto, adjacent to the Carmo and Chiado areas, with centenary houses and small traditional stores.

Serviced with an excellent network of accessibility and a diverse quantity of public transports, it is situated in one of the most known nightlife zones in Lisbon, as inumerous bars, restaurants and not forgetting the 'Fado' homes. In the last years it has acquired a life of its own and characteristic where different generations meet to enjoy the nightlife.

Part of the buildings find themselves still in renovation, maintaining their original blueprints, which came about the permitting of new installations and alternative commercial spaces, coming across multi-brand stores, studios, workshops, tattoo and piercing stores. Gradually it has become a searched area for residence, turning its population into a renewed and younger one.

It is in this burlesque and intellectual environment that we find the Rua dos Mouros edifice. An edifice where you find a commitment between history, sophistication and the modernization of the urban redevelopment and the finishing touches of the apartments.

The project consisted in the urban redevelopment of the edifice by converting it into a renting habitat with NO BEDROOMS typologies, where it primes functionality, and the simple and contemporary design modernizing the space, maintain the original blueprint of the edifice, valorizing it in this way and also the street through the standardization of the street in terms of fences as the projects foresees the construction of one more floor.

Therefore the existing coverage was dismounted (roof tiles, eaves and guttering, garrets, beams, lining) as well as the structure that supports all its elements (poles, wood, row sticks, corners and scores) was substituted by the new floor in metallic structure of light steel (with reinforced structures between floors) and the new coverage with the constructive system of the previous.

To the exterior level a cleaning processed of all the stonework with silicone sand, the treatment and restoration of the joints and the placing of two new groups of stonework similar to the existing on the new floor was constructed. Placing guards in tube/pipe metallic structures to the veranda of the floor that is to be added to construction with metallization and painted with enamel paint.

The existing plaster was removed and replaced with a new one of medium RHP cement with placing of fiberglass netting in the intermediate phase of the filling and previously placed cements with covered finishing off being painted with coated water paint and primary sealant. The reparation of all the voids will be affected in wood by the traditional process of burning and prepared for painting in enamel paint.

To the interior level the walls was chiseled, inclusive of the stairway void, treated and painted as well as the ceilings. The stairs in wood was covered and the steps and casings sandblasted, with cement in the joints and placed varnish to finish. The railing was also covered and painted with enamel paint. The ledge doors was also treated and painted. The entire building was provided with new technical installations.

In the interior of the apartments a general procedure to the walls was take place, the reparation of the stucco and structural modulation in 'pladur' of the ceilings and respective paints. Kitchenet's totalmente equipadas. To the kitchenette and sanitary installations the floor was covered in 'wengué' ceramic and the sanitary walls in stone. The kitchenette was fully equipped.

The Rua dos Mouros building is an example of a totally rehabilitated project which offers all the comfort and functionality of a new allied construction to the singularity and the patrimonial preservation.

The excellent location, the quality of the construction, the functionality and the modernization of the finishing touches, as well as the attention given to the details valorize the building and all its investment.

This project was nominated for the Prémios Nacionais de Reabilitação Urbana (Urban Redevelopment National Awards) for the category of Best Intervention for Residential Use.
